Arizona’s premier custom closet company is proud to share that Organizers Direct Founder, Neil Balter, was selected as the Sponsor Spotlight for the first edition of Life at McDowell Mountain.

Life at McDowell Mountain focuses on the activities happening at McDowell Mountain Ranch and is a social newsletter contributed to by the residents themselves. The magazine’s goal is to increase social interactions between residents in the area and develop a stronger sense of community. The April 2015 issue of this new magazine was delivered to McDowell Mountain homeowners free of charge.

Neil Balter was interviewed about his business, personal life and what makes Arizona Garage & Closet Design different from other custom closet companies in Arizona. AGCD is just one of about 250 authorized Organizers Direct dealers. Before starting Organizers Direct in 1995, Balter founded California Closets in 1978, which he sold in 1990 to Williams-Sonoma, Inc.

Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Tell us about your family.

Here is an excerpt from a book I wrote called The Closet Entrepreneur.

“In 1978, my involvement in the business world began purely by accident. I moved out of my parent’s house when I was a senior in high school…Now I had to pull my act together and find a way to support myself. And thus began the California Closet Company.”

Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now (i.e. education, career path).

I wish I could thrill you with the lessons I learned in my first year of business. The truth is, my first year was defined by my tough, blue-collar labor and reckless youth. I was 18 years old when I started California Closets….

The fundamental reason why California Closets became successful is simple: It was a good idea. People have been organizing closets since the Stone Age. The different was nobody had ever made it into a business before I did.
